Brittany Field Trial Hall of Fame
Election Criteria and Guidelines for Dogs and Persons

On behalf of the Brittany Field Trial Hall of Fame, BFTHF, we are asking you as an individual to participate in the 2008 BFTHF nomination process. The BFTHF is one part of the Bird Dog Foundation, Grand Junction, TN. The purpose of the BFTHF is to recognizing and honor Brittanys and Brittany owners that have made

significant contributions to the sport of field trials. The Field Trial Hall of Fame is the home repository for all Pointers/setters, Brittanys, Springers, and Retrievers that have been inducted into the FTHF. Each year representatitives of these breeds attend a very formal induction ceremony plus met and converse with others so honored. Each year pictures of these dogs and people are hung in the Hall of Fame.  To date approximately 60 Brittanys and 25 Brittany aficionados have been inducted into the BFTHF and pictures of these dogs and people hang in the Hall of Fame. To visit the Field Trial Hall of Fame, to see the pictures and the people so associated is an unforgettable experience. To be inducted into the BFTHF is the highest field trial honor a Brittany or a Brttany person can obtain. [In 1949 Charles Gehring said being inducted into the football hall of fame is like going to heaven.}

The plan is to open NOMINATIONS through the `15 of August 2004. Election will take place through the 20 of September. The induction ceremony will be at Grand Junction around the first or second weekend (early February 2005) but just prior to the Pointer/Setter National Championship drawing  .The induction ceremony is a “cooperative” venture because all breeds i.e., Brittanys as well as pointer/setter, retrievers, and springer spaniels, will be inducted one following the other.

The BFTHF Nominations process needs your support.

The Nomination step is open to all interested individual.

To make it simple, ALL interested Brittany people are in the nominating committee. If you have a candidate i.e., a person or dog; it may behoove you to be sure others know of your interest and also vote for this same person or dog! Since the number of nominations a dog or person gets is a reflection of the number of people who feel they are worthy, only dogs/people with multiple nominations will be referred to the election committee for consideration. Remember a “nomination” is equivalent to a vote in regular discussions. It is a process where everybody gets to participate. We ask that everyone become active.

Induction of an Outstanding Brittany and a Distinguished Brittany Person into the BFTHF is a three step process.

First a dog or person must be NOMINATED. Basic nomination criteria is:

Dogs:

1. Factors to be considered are a candidate’s field trial record, i.e., performance (one hour heats or longer), candidate’s progeny and their quality i.e., production, It is expected that a dog’s progeny will be largely made up of one hour field trial winners. The progeny is so important because the progeny states what the candidate will be that is where the future of this dog lies!) and recognition that the candidate has received from the field trial community.

2 A dogs candidacy depends upon the dog’s entire competitive career and particular wins or performances should not over shadow an       entire career.(History has shown that winning a championship or even a National Championship, does not necessarily make a dog an eligible nominee.)

3. Candidates should be deceased for a minimum of one year.

Persons:

People who are deserving of consideration for nomination and election into the BFTHF should have rendered exemplary service to the sport of field trialing both locally and nationally for a long period of time. This service typically includes such activities as a judge, club official, owner, breeder, handler, patron, and any combination of these factors.

Candidates should be nominated based on the contributions they have made, what they have given to the game, not what they have received. BFTHF nominees should be givers to the sport, not takers or self promoter.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________

Second, from the list of dogs and persons with the largest number of nominations, the Election Committee will select i.e., ELECT, worthy dogs and people for induction into the BFTHF.

Third,  the elected dog and person will be FORMALLY INDUCTED into the Field Trial Hall of Fame in Grand Junction, TN. Induction into the BFTHF is the highest honor in field trialing for a Brittany or a Brittany owner!

The purpose of the Nominating Committee is to nominate Outstanding Brittanys and Distinguished Brittany people. Generally Outstanding Dogs are recognized by their field trial performance record (Ch’ship wins) and production or breeding record. These are the same dogs you would like to find in the pedigree of that good pup you just bought!

We are looking for worthy Brittany people, i.e., people who have made outstanding contributions to the world of field trials. These contributions may be as a judge, a breeder, a field trial official, a reporter, a patron or any contributions of the above. We are looking for individuals who have made a difference to the game for all of us!

BFTHF Nomination Committee:

Induction of an Outstanding Brittany and a Distinguished Brittany Person into the BFTHF is a three step process. First a dog or person must be NOMINATED. Second, the dogs and persons with the top nominations must be ELECTED by the Election Committee, and finally (or third) the elected dog and person will be FORMALLY INDUCTED into the Field Trial Hall of Fame in Grand Junction, TN.

The purpose of the Nominating Committee is to nominate Outstanding Brittanys and Distinguished Brittany people (i.e., those who have made an outstanding contributions to the sport of field trialing) and thus to make them eligible for subsequent election into the BFTHF. The number of nominations a dog or person receives is an indication of the number of people who believe that dog or person should be in the BFTHF!  The Election Committee only looks at the dogs and people that have receive the most nominations!

The Nominating Committee is an ad hoc committee that exists each year. Membership is voluntary and all Brittany people who nominate worthy Brittany dogs or people to the BFTHF are MEMBERs. We ask everyone to participate. The only reward is the knowledge that your effort will help a dog or person get elected to the BFTHF. Send your nominations to the BFTHF secretary.

The most satisfactory method of obtaining nominations is to have interested persons at field trials events collecting nominations from concerned trialers.  The objective is to obtain input from a wide variety of people. Persons doing this should provide a petition stating that the petitioners believe this dog/person has made outstanding contributions to the sport of Field Trialing.  Petitions are an easy way to get interested people involved, and it is the most practical way to obtain the 100 + nominations needed to meet the minimum requirement  for every individual nominated.  The individual soliciting nominations is critical to this process.

Basic Criteria

Dogs and persons to be considered should have made and should be known for the significant contributions that have been made to the sport of field trialing. (Worthy candidates should be well enough known that only nominal descriptive material is required.)  Normally, no more than two worthy persons and dogs will be elected in any calendar year.  The nomination step will be complete by October 15 of each year.

Dogs:

1. Factors to be considered are

a candidate’s field trial record, i.e., performance (one hour heats or longer),
candidate’s progeny and their quality i.e., production,

(It is expected that a dog’s progeny will be largely made up of one hour field trial winners. The progeny is so important
because the progeny states what the candidate will be that is where the future of this dog lies!)

and recognition that the candidate has received from the field trial community.

BFTHF Election Committee:

The purpose of the Election Committee is to elect to the BFTHF Outstanding Brittanys and Distinguished Brittany people that have been nominated by the Nomination Committee. The Election Committee will elect dogs and people from a list consisting of nominated dogs and people, i.e., whose who have received the most nominations as specified by the Nominating Committee. This committee is charged with electing Brittanys and Brittany owners that the elector believes are worthy, i.e., those who have made an outstanding contribution to the sport of field trialing, and whose stature is comparable to the previously elected dogs and people

The Election Committee performs a significant task and only the best and the most knowledgeable field trial Ch’ship people will be asked to participate in its activities. It is only natural that these people be drawn from the ranks of people actively engaged with Ch’ship field trials!  (The American Field has a recommendation that a person should have been involved in trials for upwards of 10 years.)

The current plan is to have an Election Committee consisting of a minimum of 30 persons. The Election Committee will be drawn from the following sources:

            1. BFTHF Board of Directors
            2. People instrumental in the conduct of Brittany Open Ch’ships.
                        a. The Brittany Major Ch’ship stakes,i.e., The US Open Ch’ship and the                                                                       Deep South Free-For All Ch’ship.
                        b. Individuals identified with the Open All-Age Ch’ships that have been in
existence for a minimum of 5 years and, have built a reputation for the quality of their Ch’ship.

            3. Additional people will be drawn from a list of suitable people including Reporters and Ch’ship Judges. This list is used to
assure that there is a 30 person member-ship in the Election Committee.

            4. Individuals vote, Clubs are not represented in this activity.

In fulfilling the BFTHF business, I contact individuals requesting help in the BFTHF processes. The people contacted have been identified as being reliable, knowledgeable and willing to participate! We are always looking for the input of an   individual, and there is the fear that a club’s consensus may dilute the individual’s opinion! Therefore, nobody should ever expect to get a ballot simply because he belongs to a given Club or organization!

To be elected a Brittany and/or a Brittany person must receive  60%  of the votes  from     the Election Committee membership.. In other words if there are 30 people on the Election Committee and all of them vote, 18 votes for each dog or person are required for election. However, if 25 vote the five who did not vote essentially represent a NO vote and again 18 of the 25 must vote for a dog or a person in order to elect that dog or person to the BFTHF.

Please note!  It is critical that all election committee members vote!

BFTHF Induction Process

Each year, the Pointer/setter, Brittany, Retriever, and Spaniels consecutively hold their Induction Ceremonies at the Sporting Dog Center in Grand Junction, TN. This process is held on the first week end in February just prior to the start of the Pointer/Setter National Championship. This is a big festivity for all pointing breeds.

Induction is very formal. The inductee is introduced. The inductee’s presenter is introduced. And any additional people who are part of the Induction Ceremony are introduced. Next the presenter makes his /her remarks to or for the inductee. If the additional people have any remarks, they are made.  Then the inductee makes his remarks. Appropriate scrolls emblematic of the election to the BFTHF have been prepared and at this time, the inductee is given his scroll. Finally, a commemorative BFTHF label pin is presented to the inductee.

The inductee’s picture will be hung in the Hall of Fame. A picture is not needed immediately, but you need to work on it!

If the inductee is a Brittany, the recommended picture size is 22 x 24 and for a person the picture size is 18 x 22.

In the background the following has been done:

1.      Formal announcement of each year’s elected people/Brittanys.

BDC will send announcements to each inductee and to any inductee friends       that have been identified.

Announcements will appear in the American Field and/or the American Brittany Magazine.

2.      The inductee names will be added to the formal BFTHF roster.

The official roster is part of the brochure for the BFTHF induction         ceremony.

3.  A yearly BFTHF brochure to be available at the induction ceremony is prepared

After appropriate applause, the inductee is now a member of the BFTHF.
